Ever wonder if the advances in technology are really making a difference for children?

High-tech devices help kids with disabilities

In reading this article you begin to see how technology is playing an important role in helping better the lives of our special needs students. Through Assistive Technology students with special needs are able to live productive lives in and out of school because it focuses on their individual needs. Our special needs students are able to communicate and participate in school functions without the assistances of people. For example the article talks about a young boy who has cerebral palsy he is able to participate in school by using assistive technology, proximity to switches on his wheelchair to operate a computer with his head. HOW AMAZING is THIS!!!!! HOW POWERFUL!!  It allows the special needs student equal access to a good education “where they can learn” and truly be successful.

  1. Exactly! Creating an environment where everyone can be successful is our goal as a teacher. It's rewarding to know that technology can help students with disabilities!

  2. The addition of such technological advances in education will help redefine what the "Least Restrictive Environment" once was. Ideally one day "inclusive environments" will become standard as the playing fields continue to be smoothed over!

  3. Great response to the article. You are exactly correct, a tool that can help level the playing field for special education students should not only be welcomed into the classrooms, but it should be required. If we can offer such technologies that can enhance the level of education for certain students, then aren't we doing them an injustice by not supplying them with it.

  4. Although I have not had the opportunity to observe much technology used in the classroom, assistive tools for special needs students is an excellent example of how technology helps students! I couldn't even imagine how a child, or an adult for that matter, would be able to operate a computer with his head. This just goes to show the useful technology can be and the doors it opens for students with special needs.

  5. Assistive technology can certainly be very cool and equalizing. Is this type of technology more acceptable amongst educators? Why don't we give kids a chance to learn with tools they are already comfortable using?

  6. I really like your choice of differentiating font size here, it makes your response more exciting to read. Technology is quite powerful and I believe we have only seen a glimpse of what it can really do!

  7. The use of computer technology in schools has increased dramatically in recent years and shows few signs of slowing down. To teach all students in a class effectively, a teacher must take into account the variety of ways in which students differ from one another, and offer instruction that responds to this variety. It is important to see how technology can support and enhance student learning with understanding to all students.
